Southwest style pottery is hand
turned on a potters wheel. When bone dry, a second clay, a form
of terra sigalatta, is brushed on the surface. When this is dry,
the pot is hand rubbed and burnished with soft cloths. This creates
a smooth satin finish. Each piece is then fired to 1650 degrees.
When the kiln temperature drops to 1000 degrees, the pots are
removed with tongs, welding gloves, and a lot of caution. Horse
hair and/or emu feathers are placed on the nearly red hot surface
and are immediately reduced to ash. Their image is forever burned
into the clay !
NOTE !
These pots are relatively soft and porous from this process,
THEREFORE, they are decorative only. Please don't expect them
to hold water, they won't !!! They will be an elegant, unique,
addition to your decor.
